Often this is initially triggered by excessive stress.
Common signs of stress include sleeping problems, sweating, loss of appetite and difficulty concentrating. You may feel anxious, irritable or low in self esteem, and you may have racing thoughts, worry constantly or go over things in your head. You may notice that you lose your temper more easily, drink more or act unreasonably. You may also experience headaches, muscle tension or pain, or dizziness.
Stress comes in many forms. Family stress, financial stress, work stress, educational stress, homelife stress, exam stress, travel stress, commuting stress, relationship stress, parenting stress, health issues, pain stress, roadrage and the constant bad TV news stress.
A recent survey, called the "Bristol study", of a random UK population sample, showed that about 20% of the workers reported very high or extremely high levels of stress at work. The summary concluded that all of the analyses clearly demonstrated the scale of occupational stress is much greater in full-time employment than in part-time work, and that socio-economic status, marital status, education and age all made a significant contribution to overall stress levels. So, not only is your job stressing you out, it is doing it even more, when other 'life' factors are taken into consideration.
When stress becomes depression.
Depression that comes from stress is hard to recognize.
You maybe suffering with depression because of the amount of time that you have been stressed, but it's not until you are at your wits end that you or your doctor gives you that nod that depression is here, and it's accelerating and compounding all your symptoms. Many people go into hiding at this point. Telling someone is a bit no-no. Some even create other behaviour to hide the depression, from their families, their work collegues, their spouses.
They'll adopt OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) behaviour as a cover, or severe backache, or migraines, anything so as not to have to admit to depression. That coverup is stressful, so the cycle goes round and round. One chap I spoke to even said, I'd swap this for a heart attack, at least then people would have some sympathy. So it's clear what you're up against.
For many people there is little you can do to prevent stress because it can creep up on you unawares. But there are many things you can do to manage stress more effectively once you are diagnosed, such as learning how to relax, taking regular exercise and adopting good time-management techniques.
The other system that I promote for a.) Dealing with stress, and b.) preventing recurrence, is EFT or Emotional Freedom Techniques. This generally means, that even though you may have not been able to prevent your original stresses and the aftermath of that, you will have the tools in place to prevent another, or future attack, from whatever source.
